Mayo Clinic Diet

Posted on July 31st, 2008 by crystal in Diet Logs

I have no idea where the title of this diet came from! The Mayo Clinic did not create this diet, nor do they advise that anyone try it because it is not nutritionally sound. A lot of the hype around this diet has been found to be false. So here’s what you do. You are on the diet for 12 days and then off of the diet for 2 days. The diet incorporates a lot of grapefruit into each meal because grapefruit has been thought to be a natural fat-burning food. This has since then found to be untrue. Just the thought of grapefruit makes me puker! The diet is restrictive of most carbs. Here’s an example of what you would eat during the day while on this plan. For breakfast you would have ½ grapefruit or 8 ounces of unsweetened grapefruit juice, two eggs, 2 pieces of bacon. For lunch you could have ½ grapefruit or 8 ounces of unsweetened grapefruit juice, a salad with raw vegetables, any dressing so long as it is not fat-free or low-fat, and any meat cooked however you want. For dinner (yep you guessed it!) you could have ½ grapefruit or 8 ounces of unsweetened grapefruit juice, meat cooked any way you like, any vegetables that are green or red. Did anyone notice a pattern here? That is a lot of grapefruit! Gag me! Don’t get me wrong, I do like grapefruit but there is no way I could eat it that many times a day. What’s worse about this plan is that if you do lose weight, you will gain it back as soon as you start eating normally again. Yo-yo dieting…we all know how this turns out!
